American Trails Announces 2023 Legacy Trail Program Awardees

American Trails awarded $1.35 million in 38 grants to 33 organizations in the first year of the Legacy Trail Program funding. The program is administered by American Trails and funded through a cost-share agreement with the United States Forest Service (USFS) to support trails projects on forests and grasslands managed by the USFS through 2027.

The projects funded meet at least one of the programs goals: restore fish and aquatic organism passage, improve trail resiliency, preserve trail access, decommission unauthorized trails, and convert unneeded Forest Service roads to trails. Other priorities of this program include protecting threatened, endangered, and sensitive species, and community water sources. A total of 84 grant applications were received, requesting $4.3 million in funding. Of the 38 grants awarded, 21 of the projects funded were equine related. A complete list of Legacy Trail Program grant recipients can be found HERE.
