Oregon Horse Council’s Get Out and Ride OREGON program (GORO) was created to encourage equestrians to enjoy their horses in a non-competitive way. OHC acknowledges and awards riders at benchmarks of ride time. Our program is open to anyone who lives in Oregon and has access to riding a horse – we encourage everyone to participate!
HOW IT WORKS:
Participants must register online (or by paper form) and pay an annual fee, which allows you to accumulate hours for 365 days. You may join the program at any time, however hours only count that are accrued after joining. Logs may be turned in anytime an achievement level is reached. Our office will keep record of your hours.
Hours can accumulate year-to-year if you pay your annual fee consecutively. If you do not renew within 30 days of the conclusion of your paid year, your previous hours will be eliminated, and you will need to start over. For example: if you join on May 15, 2019 – your year will go until May 15, 2020. You will need to renew by June 15, 2020 to continue accumulating points.
The fee is $25 for adults (ages 18 and over) and $10 for youth (ages 17 & under). This program awards the rider, so you can utilize as many horses as you would like while participating and may ride in any state if the type of riding qualifies. Horses can be of any breed and do not need to be registered or owned by the rider (if permission to ride them has been properly obtained).
Riders may track their hours doing any of the following non-competitive, non-compensated activities for riding/work. Participant must be riding on the horse or in the driver seat.
- Casual riding around your property
- Practicing for a competition
- Ranch work (working cattle, etc.)
- Taking or Teaching riding lessons (non-compensated)
- Trail riding
- Training under saddle (non-compensated)
WHAT DOES NOT QUALIFY:
Hours that do NOT count are any non-riding activities or compensated activities, such as:
- Cleaning Stalls
- Competition for prizes, awards, or money
- Tacking Up
- Veterinary Care
- Work that you are paid to do (i.e. paid trainer, paid lesson, etc.)
A patch will be provided upon joining and then at each achievement level you will receive a patch and recognition through OHC’s website, Facebook page, and e-newsletter.
