Acupuncture Presentation by Dr. Pasgaard

Dr. Palsgaard is certified in veterinary medical acupuncture and will be speaking about acupuncture and its benefits on Thursday, October 14 at 6pm. Acupuncture is a great tool to help aid in the health of your horse. Acupuncture works through neuromodulation to help improve the body’s healing abilities. While it started as a traditional eastern medicine technique, it has been widely documented to be efficacious in evidence based studies. It has a wide range of effects on many aspects of the body, affecting the central, autonomic, and peripheral nervous systems. The many physiologic effects of acupuncture allow for targeted treatment of a problem in addition to systemic neuroregulation to help aid in the restoration of normal function. In addition to traditional acupuncture dry-needling, electroacupuncture is often used.

Electroacupuncture uses an electronic pulse to enhance traditional dry-needling. Acupuncture needles are placed in their same points, then electrodes are attached to the needles, providing an electric pulse at that site. Electroacupuncture has been shown to give a stronger, more consistent and prolonged therapy than dry needling alone.

Acupuncture and electroacupuncture are used commonly used for pain control, allergies, nerve dysfunction (facial nerve paralysis), head shaking, reproductive problems, edema/swelling reduction, and scar tissue reduction. Acupuncture can be used on its own, or in conjunction with other treatment modalities.
